Overview

The Division of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation offers MD undergraduate, resident and fellowship training.

Our residency program is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The physiatrist, or specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), needs to demonstrate excellence in a range of diagnostic and therapeutic skills. In addition to competence in relevant clinical areas, the physiatrist must learn management skills, including the ability to direct and work with interdisciplinary teams. The physiatrist must have the expertise necessary to critically review literature, conduct research and quality-assurance projects, while teaching patients, families and colleagues about rehabilitation.

Our division offers educational opportunities to undergraduate medical students in the form of electives. We also have staff and residents who have interests in medical education and are involved in the anatomy and musculoskeletal (MSK) curriculum as well as neurological examination.

We have a well-rounded residency program with 12 residents in the 2011-2012 academic year. The residents form an eclectic group that is cohesive and caring, and which places a premium on learning.

Fellowship opportunities are also available through the division. Some examples of recent fellowships include: sports medicine, pediatric rehabilitation, interventional physiatry and neuromuscular diseases.
